I walked over to the goat farm for a bite of brunch, after taking care of some household projects, this morning. On the way down the hill, almost to the back driveway to the farm, I suddenly heard a strident piping that sounded like a VERY large flicker. I stopped and backtracked a bit, looking for the culprit who was making so much noise. I finally saw the pileated woodpecker as he took off into the farther upper canopy growth.

About an hour later, on my way back up our hill, I heard his piping again and slowly edged my way around to see him several times over about a 1000 foot distance, as he moved from tree to tree, until he finally moved off into the farther growth again. WHAT A TREAT!! Bless God!!! I have only seen them at a great distance in the past when I was a kid, and once last year over the top and on the far side of our hill. To be able to almost walk along with the pileated as he foraged was totally amazing for me, since in the past they have seemed extremely shy and wary.
