--- MacGillivray Fauna Illustrations by MacGillivray, William ---
Part of the largely unpublished collection of the work of William MacGillivray [1796-1852]. The collection was presented to The Natural History Museum by MacGillivray's son, Paul, in 1892.

It is likely that MacGillivray obtained his fish specimens from the fish market. It is probable that he would have looked for the best example of a particular type of fish and taken it home to paint it.

Pencil and watercolour. MacGillivray's drawing of the fish is both scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing. His use of colour and shadow reveals the texture of the Dory.

Species: Zeus faber.
Date: 1831-1841

John Dory, St Pierre or Peter's Fish, refers to fish of the genus Zeus, especially Zeus faber, of widespread distribution. It is an edible benthic coastal marine fish with a laterally compressed olive-yellow body which has a large dark spot, and long spines on the dorsal fin. The dark spot is used to flash an 'evil eye' if danger approaches. Its large eyes at the front of the head provide it with binocular vision and depth perception, which are important for predators. The John Dory’s eye spot on the side of its body also confuses prey, which are scooped up in its big mouth. Order: Zeiformes, Family: Zeidae, Genus: Zeus, Species: Zeus faber Linnaeus, 1758.
