◈ 소리가 새들의 번식을 재촉한다?
새들의 번식 능력에 있어 떼를 지어 서식하는 경우 번식력이 높다는 오랜 가설이 사실임을 확신케 하는 연구 결과가 나왔다. 1930년대 조류학자들은 큰 무리를 이뤄 서식하는 새들의 경우 그렇지 않은 경우와 비교해 번식이 동시에 일어나는 경향과 낳는 시기도 빠르고 알의 크기도 크다고 제안한 바 있다. 이번 연구결과에 따르면 옆 둥지의 새들과 같은 시기에 새끼를 낳으면 어린 새들이 포식자의 공격으로부터 희생당할 확률을 줄일 수 있다는 이점이 있고, 또한 번식기 초반에 새끼를 낳음으로 해서 어미 새가 새끼를 위해 투자하는 시간이 늘어 성공적으로 키울 가능성이 높아진다는 장점도 있다고 한다. 연구진은 이들이 번식과 관련한 소리에도 또한 반응한다는 사실을 보여줬다고 말했다. 즉 어디 선가 번식기에 내는 소리가 자신들에게 들리게 되면 알을 낳기에 안전한 시기로 판단한다는 것이다.(출처:한국과학기술정보연구원)
