◈ 뱀은 온 몸으로 듣는다(?)
흔히들 밤늦게 피리를 불면 뱀이 나온다고 한다. 혹자는 늦은 밤에 피리를 불다가 호되게 혼난 경험도 있을 것이다. 하지만 정작 뱀은 피리소리를 듣지 못한다. 늦은 시각 피리를 불어 뱀이 나타난다면 아마 소리보다는 공기중의 떨림 때문일 것이다.
뱀은 귀로 추정되는 기관이 있지만 퇴화됐기 때문에 소리를 들을 수 없다. 다만 소리를 몸으로 느낀다. 진동에 민감한 뱀은 피부를 통해 지면에서 들려오는 미세한 진동을 감지해 소리를 분간한다. 땅에서 전해오는 진동으로 먹이의 움직임을 읽고 공기중의 떨림으로 소리를 감지하는 것이다.
