◈ 캥거루가 새끼를 배에 담고 기르는 이유? 캥거루는 어린 새끼들을 배에 있는 작은 주머니에서 4~6개월 가량 키운다. 흔히 적과 외부환경으로부터 새끼들을 보호하기 위해 주머니를 활용하는 것이 외에, 주머니에 새끼를 넣고 다니는 것이 어미의 점프력에 도움을 준다는 주장이 제기되어 흥미를 끈다. 연구진은 캥거루가 소모하는 신진대사를 분석했는데, 어미 캥거루 체중의 15%(새끼의 무게)에 해당하는 부하를 캥거루에 준 후, 캥거루의 물질대사와 에너지 소모량을 측정한 결과 부하에 따른 신진대사의 변화가 거의 없다는 사실을 밝혀냈다. 즉, 설정된 부하가 일종의 탄성에너지를 발생시켜 계속된 점프에서는 에너지 소모를 적게한다는 설명이다. 이러한 장점 외에도 새끼가 어미의 주머니 속에서 생활하면 새끼의 운동에너지를 최대한 줄일 수 있어 결과적으로 어미가 양육에 소모되는 에너지를 절약한다는 점도 새끼를 주머니 속에서 기르는 이유이다.
