The body of the giant African snail (Achatina fulica) grows to a length of almost 30cm, while the shell may reach 20cm in length. Giant African snails are indigenous to East Africa, where they feed mostly on decaying vegetation. However, the activities of humans have spread the species to South Asia, Indonesia and the Pacific islands, where it causes widespread destruction of agricultural crops.
