Herds of Przewalski's horses once roamed the steppes of China, Mongolia and the former U.S.S.R. Today, after centuries of hunting, the species survives only in zoos and nature reserves. In their natural environment, the wild horses grazed on grasses, leaves and bulbs, and remained close to permanent water supplies during the heat of summer. In winter, their body hair grew long and shaggy to protect them from the bitter cold of winter.
