Description
Crusty nautilus (Allonautilus scrobiculatus)

The crusty nautilus (also known as the fuzzy nautilus) is a species of nautilus found principally in the waters near New Guinea and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.

The most obvious element by which to recognize the crusty nautilus is the large open umbilicus (in the center of the shell when viewed from the side). This shell acquires its name from the outer covering, or periostracum, of the live shell that can appear crusty or shaggy.

Once thought to be extinct this nautilus has been rarely seen since 1986, thus making it extremely rare.
