Like cliff-nesting seabirds, turtles come ashore simply to breed. Many species arrive on traditional beaches in their thousands, but the two-metre-long leatherback turtle - the largest of all turtles - is a solitary wanderer that lays its eggs on tropical beaches throughout the world.
