The island of Madagascar has been isolated from Africa for millions of years, and its wildlife has avoided many of the changes that have occurred there. The ring-tailed lemur is a prosimian (a primate low down on the evolutionary ladder) that has flourished on Madagascar, while its prosimian relatives on the mainland have been on the decline ever since the evolution of their more advanced cousins, the monkeys.
