◈ 딱따구리는 기관총보다 빠르다?
송곳처럼 곧고 뾰족한 부리를 이용하여 나무를 쪼아 구멍을 내고, 그 속의 벌레를 잡아먹는 딱따구리는 한 자리에서 약 1000마리 정도의 곤충을 먹어치우는 대식가이다. 그렇다면 딱따구리는 얼마나 자주 나무를 쪼며 굶주린 배를 채울까? 딱따구리는 보통 1초에 15번~16번, 하루에 약 1만 2천 번 나무를 쫀다. 한 번 쪼는데 걸리는 시간은 1000분의 1초도 되지 않는데 이러한 속도는 기관총 발사 속도보다 두 배 정도 빠른 것이다.
그런데 이러한 속도로 빈번히 나무를 쪼면서도 왜 머리가 터지지 않을까? 딱따구리의 부리는 다른 새와 비교해 강할 뿐 아니라 다른 새들과 달리 두개골과 부리사이에 스폰지 같은 푹신푹신한 조직이 서로 연결되어 있어 큰 충격을 흡수할 수 있다. 또 딱따구리의 머리가 항상 쪼는 면과 직각을 이루도록 목의 근육이 특별하게 만들어져 있어서 시속 2천 킬로미터의 속도로 움직여도 머리가 터지지 않는다.
