특징: 붉은색 바탕에 흰색 반점이 뚜렷하며 국제보호동물로 지정되어 있다. 봄에 뿔이 나기 시작하는데 이를 녹용이라 하며 가을에는 딱딱하게 녹각으로 변하여 서로간 또는 상대방을 제압하는 무기로 사용된다. 그 녹각은 이듬해 봄에 자연히 떨어진다. 임신기간은 약 220 ~ 230일이며 수명은 15 ~ 20년이다.
