◈ 흰개미 공생미생물을 통한 미래 신에너지 개발 흰개미를 통해 새로운 에너지를 얻는 방법이 1997년 노벨 물리학상 수상자인 Steven Chu 박사에 의해 연구되고 있다. Chu 박사에 따르면, 흰개미의 장(腸)에서 식물의 단단한 섬유조직인 셀룰로오스를 에탄올로 전환시킬 수 있는 자연적인 과정이 있는데, 흰개미의 장에 공생하는 미생물을 대량으로 생산해 낸다면, 화석연료를 대체할 수 있는 친환경적인 에너지를 만들 수 있다는 것이다. 현재에탄올이 휘발유를 대체할 수 있는 에너지로 평가되지만, 옥수수 등에서 추출하는데 드는 에너지가 추출된 에너지보다 크기 때문에 시장성이 없는 상태이다. "앞으로 10~20년 후면, 우리는 흰개미 장(腸)에 서식하는 미생물들의 유전자 서열을 밝히고 이 미생물들이 셀룰로오스를 분해할 때 실제로 어떤 일이 발생하는지에 대한 원리를 밝혀내 이 미생물을 대량생산할 수 있다면 새로운 에너지를 만들 수 있을 것"이라고 그는 말한다. 만일 그의 주장이 옳다면 머지않아 우리는 에너지 부족 및 환경 문제에서 자유로와 질 수 있는 흰개미가 만든 친환경 에너지를 사용할 수 있을 것이다.
