"What are the 'layers' of a tropical rainforest?"
"There are three of them. The top is the canopy - a
ceiling of green tree crowns that basks in the sunlight.
Beneath this canopy is the understory, where a mixture
of young trees, palms, and vines grow. The floor of the
forest is covered by plants growing in the fallen debris
and decomposing vegetation that lie on the fragile soil."
