백송골(북극매) 학명 : Falco rusticolus 영명 : Gyr Falcon 체장 : (♂) 50~54Cm (♀) 57~61(H) 날개편길이 : (♂) 110~120 (♀)124~130(H) 백송골은 송골(매) 종류 중에서 제일 큰 매로 우리나라에서도 예로부터 아주 귀한 매로 여겼으며, 고어로 옥송골(玉松骨), 옥해청(玉海靑), 귀송골(貴松骨)이라했고, 해동청(海東靑)과 더불어 중국의 황제에게 보내는 귀한 선물이었다. 이 매는 추운 지방인 북극권에 살며 송골(매)보다 더 큰 물새를 잡아먹고 산다. 한국에서 채집된 기록은 단 한번 있으며 털 색깔은 백색형, 반백형, 암색형 3종류가 있다. 이 매는 현재 우리나라엔 도래하지 않고 소련의 사하린 및 캄차카바도와 가까운 일본의 북해도에는 매년 겨울철에 오고 있다. 특히 백색형은 우아하며 매 중에서 최고가 이고 중에 유럽에서는 왕족만이 이 매를 권위의 상징으로 소유할 수 있다고 한다.
