The great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) also known as the eastern white pelican, rosy pelican or white pelican is a bird in the pelican family. Pelecanus onocrotalus breeds from southeastern Europe through Asia and Africa, in swamps and shallow lakes. The great white pelican is a huge bird — only the Dalmatian pelican is, on average, larger among pelicans. The breeding range of Pelecanus onocrotalus extends to Ethiopia, Tanzania, Chad, northern Cameroons, and Nigeria in Africa, and has been observed or reported breeding in Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa. Order: Pelecaniformes > Family: Pelecanidae > Genus: Pelecanus > Species: Pelecanus onocrotalus
