Six species are now known to live in the USA. Three require 17 years
for development, but the other three require 13 years. Generally
speaking, cicadas in a given area all emerge on the same year, once
every 17 or 13 years, depending on the species.

The actual name of this "American" cicada is the periodical
cicada, a species whose life cycle is characterized by
the adult emergence happening only once every 13 or 17 years.
