Saccopharynx lavenbergi, commonly known as the whiptail gulper eel, is a rare deep-sea fish. It features a massive, distensible mouth, a dark, scaleless body, and a long, whiplike tail tipped with a luminescent organ. It lives in the midwater and deep ocean zones down to 3,000 meters.
