The body of a pacarana is very like that of a porcupine - without the spines. It is a heavily-built, rather clumsy inhabitant of the forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Pacaranas are rather elusive, and at one time they were thought to be extinct. They are still hunted, however, and their meat is considered a delicacy.
