The boa constrictor lives in Central and South America in a range of habitats, from deserts to rain forests, though it avoids water. A ground dweller, it is one of the largest of American snakes, growing to over 18 ft. long. On some Brazilian plantations, boa constrictors are valued, since they keep down the rodent populations.
