Timid and solitary, the southern pudu lives in the deep forests of the lower Andes. It is the smallest of all the true deer, little larger than a Jack Russell terrier. Yet in anatomy it closely resembles the red deer of Europe and Asia. As with so many deer, it has suffered from widespread and indiscriminate hunting.
