The Spanish imperial eagle once ranged over Morocco, Algeria, Spain and Portugal. By 1975 it bred in only a few Spanish sierras and in Europe's last great wilderness, the Coto Doñana National Park near Seville. This is probably Europe's most threatened bird, with fewer than 400 individuals surviving. Although it has been well protected in its Doñana breeding grounds, it may soon die out completely unless farmers outside the protective limits of the park can be persuaded to stop shooting it.
