regarding john's question as to whether the coloration is due to genetic
mutation or is normal for this species:
there are lots of white fox squirrels (tree skwerls), mostly back east
(USA), but i've never heard of white ground squirrels anywhere. i'm assuming
they're very rare and would appreciate any info anyone runs across regarding
this anomaly.
btw: when i posted a few adult white ground squirrel pics a while back, some
folks insisted that they were albinos, but they're absolutely, definitely
not. i think this batch of critters proves this once and for all. there are
actually 5 - 6 white juveniles this season. only two individuals are shown
in this posting. unfortunately, the main predator of these squirrels are
surburban utility vehicles visiting the regional park where i took the pics,
and the colony is adjacent to a roadway.
