The brown bear of Eurasia and North America is one of many lowland animals that regularly venture up the forested mountain slopes. For the European brown bear, however, the mountains have become a last refuge. Once widespread throughout the lowlands of Europe, it has been driven from most regions by centuries of forest clearance and hunting.
