Description | Peacock worm (Sabella pavonina)
The mudflats in estuaries often bristle with the projecting tubes of fanworms such as the peacock worm. At low tide, the tubes look like clusters of muddy macaroni, but as soon as the water covers them the worms emerge and blossom, spreading their fans of feathery tentacles to sift the water for microscopic plants and animals. | |
