BULLDOG
It's hard to imagine these three serious looking Bulldog puppies attacking
anything. Let alone an enraged bull. The fact is that the breed was
originally developed for bull baiting and dog-fighting. Those were the
favorite "sports" among the inhabitants of many an English village before
1835, when bull baiting and dog-fighting were declared illegal. Some
discerning dog lovers then took it upon themselves to breed Bulldogs that
lacked ferocity rather than let the breed become extinct. Their efforts
gave us the sweet natured "ugly but cute" Bulldog of today. While he is
sometimes called the "English Bulldog", the official American Kennel Club
name is Bulldog. At a full-grown weight of from 40 to 55 pounds, the
"sour-mug" has endeared himself to the world. He has been used as a
trademark and a symbol for the British Empire.
