Little green heron (Butorides virescens) Green Heron
Butorides virescens
The little Green Heron feeds alone or in pairs. It preys on a wide variety of insects, frogs, and small fish, often in little inland ponds and marshes that are not big enough for the other, larger herons. It stretches its neck and bill forward as if taking aim, and, after a few cautious steps, seizes the fish with a jab of its bill.
Look For: A small, dark heron with yellow legs.
Length: 16-22".
