Description
can anyone identify what this animal is?

i came across this animal while in East timor. It looks kind of like a cross between a possum (note the pink tail), a civet (which are common in the area), and a loris.. but i can't seem to find this animal anywhere..

can anyone help me? e-mail me if you've got any ideas.

It may be an Australian Cuscus (Phalanger orientalis timorensis).

hey thanks for the help! i think you're right!! not an australian cuscus, of course since it's not australia, but apparently some species of cuscus does live in timor.. very interesting..

I think Jinsuk is right. Gray cuscus (Phalanger orientalis) is thought to have originated on New Guinea and then to have been distributed primarily by prehistoric humans to nearby islands, including Timor. Check out http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Phalanger_orientalis.html

I think it might be a ground cuscus. Tim Flannery's excellent books on wildlife of New Guinea and the accompanying volume on nearby island groups would be a good place to start (though it doesn't cover Timor specifically).
