One of the really tough ones to scan - Roan antelope in Hannover Zoo Hi again,
this is one of the pictures that is almost impossible to process in a
normal photo lab. The Roan antelope struggling hard for low growing food
is completely in the shadow; the sunny spots in the background would
provide a color density making it very hard to get a decent paper print
of it. In this case, the shadows were considerably brightened up during
the scanning process to produce the digital representation you see now.
By the way, the human eye has pretty similar abilities to level the
highlights and shadows which is why paper prints produced under high
contrast conditions often are disappointing to the photographer. If
these photographic situations are familiar to you, a film scanner is the
best investment you can possibly make.
Take care -
Ralf
