Description | Call of the Wild: Dog of the Yukon is a 1997 TV movie. The screenplay by Graham Ludlow is based on the classic Jack London novel The Call of the Wild, published in 1903. Narrated by Richard Dreyfuss and starring Rutger Hauer. The Hollywood Reporter said that it was, "... a pleasant surprise. Much more faithful to Jack London's 1903 classic than the two Hollywood versions." The New York Post claimed Ludlow's adaptation was the "best version yet of Jack London's classic story of survival."
Three Leonberger 'actors' (one was a female, and two males) played the starring dog "Buck" The breed used in this adaptation was not the one identified in the novel. Jack London describes Buck as a huge, four-year-old half-Saint Bernard and half-Scottish shepherd dog. But the look is similar.
