Description | Them! (1954) is an American black and white science fiction film about a nest of gigantic irradiated ants discovered in the New Mexico desert. It is based on an original story treatment by George Worthing Yates. It was developed into a screenplay by Ted Sherdeman and Russell Hughes for Warner Bros. Pictures Inc., and was produced by David Weisbart and directed by Gordon Douglas. It stars James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon and James Arness.
One of the first of the 1950's "nuclear monster" movies, and the first "big bug" film, Them! was nominated for an Oscar for its Special Effects and won a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing. The film begins as a simple suspense story, with police investigating mysterious disappearances and unexplained deaths; it slowly develops into a horror story about radiation enlarged giant ants. To build suspense, these giants are only heard on occasion and not seen until nearly a third of the way into the film.
In the New Mexico desert, Police Sgt. Ben Peterson and his partner find a child wandering in the desert and sooner they discover that giant ants are attacking the locals. FBI agent Robert Graham teams up with Ben and with the support of Dr. Harold Medford and his daughter Dr. Patricia 'Pat' Medford, they destroy the colony of ants in the middle of the desert. Dr. Harold Medford explains that the atomic testing in 1945 developed the dangerous mutant ants. But they also discover that two queen ants have flown away to Los Angeles and they are starting a huge colony in the underground of the city. When a mother reports that her two children are missing, the team and the army have a lead to follow. Will they arrive in time to save the children and destroy the colony? | Tags | Them!, 1954, Them, Gordon Douglas, James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, James Arness, Joan Weldon, Onslow Stevens, Sean McClory, Chris Drake, Sandy Descher, Mary Alan Hokanson, Mary Ann Hokanson, Don Shelton, Fess Parker, Olin Howland, Olin Howlin, Richard Bellis, Willis Bouchey, Roydon Clark, Booth Colman, Richard Deacon, Ann Doran, Leonard Nimoy, William Schallert, Dub Taylor, animal film, monster, ant | Out-Links | IMDB - Them!
